Century Farm Barn Preservation

More than one hundred years ago, this barn was the hub of the everyday

farming operation.  Ryan's grandfather Grover milked cows

 in this barn and used it to store hay and grain.  During World War II, 

Ryan's mother milked cows in this

same barn while his father was stationed in Japan.

Even though  the everyday activity of this barn has changed,

it is still used for storage and provides a reminder

of its history on  our century farm. 

  

It seemed the right thing to preserve this part of our 

farm history by adding new tin and new doors to 

this important part of our family and farm history.

The barn certainly dresses up my calf pictures!

More importantly, the barn can continue to

be used daily and preserved for others to enjoy

as our  rural farming area in Benton County

continues to blend  into city life.

Pictures don't always tell the whole story. 

After the first cutting of hay this spring, we were faced with drought

conditions. What hay we did harvest was extremely expensive

due to increased input costs such as fertilize, diesel and even the 

net wrap.  There is no such thing as cheap hay this year!

There were times this summer during the drought

 combined with extreme heat, it was doubtful that we

 would have another cutting of hay .

 I'm thankful that the rain did begin to fall and we were 

able to get a badly needed  second cutting.

Farmers in many areas are still dealing with drought

conditions and are buying hay to feed their beef and

dairy cattle.

I'm thankful that we were able to provide  hay to a 

Texas farmer friend this week and for the 

                                                blessings we receive in sharing our bounty.

   In 1919 a land deed was recorded in these historical record books

  at the Benton County Circuit Clerk's office.  

Earlier this year, I made my journey to the office to locate the

 recorded deed  for our farm so that we could make application to

                the Arkansas Century Farm Program.                

.                                                As I turned the pages in those big old books,

                     I felt like I was stepping back in time looking at the names on each

                          page, hand written with the most precise beautiful penmanship.

                                      When I found  the recorded deed for our farm, 

                                                     I felt like I had struck gold!

Even though I have only been a part of the farm for 37 years,

I have been blessed to be a part of the ongoing farming operation, raise

the fourth generation on the farm, and enjoy sharing our love of the farm 

with the fifth generation.

Before leaving the Capitol,

we made a stop at the Arkansas Treasurer's office

so Hattie could check out where our state tax dollars are kept

and the chance to hold almost a million dollars!

I couldn't help thinking about how proud my mother-in-law

Bonnah Lyn would have been on this special day 

for our farm and family.

Without a doubt, she would say,

"my family, the best crop I ever had!"

Thankful Thursday

Although our daylight hours are silently 

slipping away as fall approaches,

the hours in September have been packed

with weaning calves and cattle working.

Each calf has received a new ear tag for 

identification, vaccinations, and wormer before

being moved to a new pasture. 

It wasn't a rodeo but it was fun to watch the 

calves kicking up their heels and showing off

as they were released from the head chute.

We decided it was their reaction to the cooler

temperatures we were all enjoying!

Even though we are not milking cows on the farm,

we are still raising babies in the hutches.

These calves are from our cows

 that are being milked at other farms. 

Their care requires feeding milk and grain 

twice daily and monitoring them

 closely for any illness. 

Living on the farm isn't just all work!

As you can see,

Hattie and Breck make life exciting and fun.

                                      I'm thankful for our life on the farm and for the jobs

                                                      of raising calves and kids!

Just before Labor Day, the square baler was pulled out of the shed, greased and

oiled, and sent to the field for what almost seems like an outdated practice.

The making of small square bales is a might more tedious than 

driving the big round baler down the field.  

You have decisions to make on the size of the

bale and the tension of the string. It proves that there is an art

  to farming and a lot of patience and praying with each bale

 that scoots out the shoot!

With the help of  the hay accumulator, a skid loader,

and a long trailer, the job of storing the hay is greatly 

 improved from the days of  a hay hauling crew that 

bucked each bale on the trailer in the field then

 unloaded and stacked  them in the barn on

 a 100 degree summer day.

I'm thankful for all the modern machinery that 

makes it possible to produce food for our calves and cows,

for the rain that we have been blessed with in this 

late summer season,

                                                                                  

                                                                                 and 

                                                 for these farm dogs that love life on the farm!

It was a bitter sweet moment as I watched the group of 

bred Holstein heifers being checked by the veterinarian

before being loaded on a truck for a trip to their 

new home in Texas. 

The heifers will be having their babies in just

a couple of months.

 

We have almost three years invested in the  daily

           care of each of these heifers.

I was with them on their first day on the farm

when we moved their mother to the milking barn and

I became their caretaker feeding them with a bottle.

I'm going to miss seeing their babies !

I'm thankful to have married the dairy farmer 

that has shared his calling with me  to be a caretaker

of these beautiful animals and a steward of the 

land we call home,

                             
                                                        the continued daily work on the farm,

and

for the opportunities that appear through transitions

in life on the farm.

 

Thankful Thursday

Although every day is different on the farm, 

we also have a routine that you can set your clock by.

When I see the calves gathering by the gate, hear the chain on the gate fall,

and see black calves turn and make  the big run for the feed manger,

I know the farmer with the feed has arrived!

The farmer and his feed truck are a little like the Pied Piper.

Calves will follow the farmer and his feed truck anywhere!

                                  

                                         Calves aren't the only things growing down on the farm!

                                   

                                 I'm thankful that Breck and Hattie are often part of our routine

                                                             days down on the farm!

Welcome to Vaughn Elementary

The community is  invited to attend the Vaughn Elementary

 ribbon cutting and open house on Monday, July 18,5:30-7:30.

I can't wait!

I've been excited since the Bentonville School Board chose

the name Vaughn Elementary. It was a labor of love for several 

community members to speak up for the name that brings

many fond memories of school days at the original 

Vaughn School.

The new Vaughn Elementary is located at

5301 SW Barron Road, Bentonville.

Since the new school is located on the southwest side

of our farm, I have watched the construction through 

every phase. It is a beautiful campus. 

This new school definitely changes the landscape of 

our community and our farming community.

At night with all the lights  it looks like a small city! 

It is my hope that  students that attend this school

will love their school like those who attended the

original Vaughn School.

Thankful Thursday

After the chores were finished, our family  gathered around the table for

our traditional  July 4th picnic supper in the cool of the air conditioner and

then made our journey to the pond for a fantastic fireworks display.

We all have a few mosquito and chigger bites but it was worth it

for the fun we had.

I am thankful for the many July 4th  memories we have

 made in this pastoral spot on the farm,

for the curious guests that joined in the fun until the first 

fire cracker was lit,

for the two inches of rain we received that 

allowed us to plant  part of our fall crop,

and

 for the freedoms we enjoy every day!

                                                             What excites a farmer?  

                                                         Hay season, of course!

                                      The farmers have been waiting impatiently to 

                                                     get started harvesting  the hay

                                                          and now, it is happening. 

                                     I'm thankful for the perfect hot and dry  weather

                                         this week  so the hay can be cut, raked

                                                  and baled in perfect condition,

                                                 for the opportunity to celebrate  Father's Day 

                                                            with  homemade ice cream,

for the memories made with our sons on all the 

days we  work together,

and for the memories 

of the fathers who raised us.

Our hay cutting season is getting off to a really slow start due

to our soggy weather but we did get started  with the field next to the 

house that is less soggy than many others.

It was important to get the mixture of rye grass and weeds cut 

so the Bermuda grass would

have a better chance to grow for the second cutting.

Even though our work has been slowed down

by the weather, I am thankful for the opportunity 

it has provided for us to  enjoy the company of those 

around us,

 let our imaginations run wild in the 

fairy garden,

                                                         
                                                            and celebrate a birthday or two!

One of the added benefits to mowing the yard next to the pasture is 

getting to watch the heifers enjoying  those grass clippings

that were blown under the fence.  They looked a little like excited

kids in a candy store!

Even though farm life is extremely busy in the month of May,

I am thankful for the moments that bring smiles,

for the family celebrations of  Mother's Day ,birthdays

 and graduations,

and for the beauty of the garden  that 

remind us that all these gifts 

are freely given by our heavenly Father.

A Mother's Love

A mother's love is special

It's present every day,

That God has sent our way.

Her job is never ending

To be there for her children

And be their guiding light.

Her thoughts are with them always

Even if they are apart,

Her children have a special place

It may be too cold or  wet for pasture grasses or crops to grow,

but you can always count on the weeds to take advantage of the 

worst conditions!

We were grateful for the two days without rain that allowed 

Cody to begin weed control spraying in the pasture next to the house.

This pasture has a variety of Bermuda and other mixed grasses that

will grow much better with less competition from the weeds and make

a more nutritious  hay bale for our cows to enjoy.

If you look closely, you can see a couple of extra heads in the 

tractor cab.  

Hattie and Breck didn't waste the opportunity 

to ride in the tractor with their Daddy.

I am thankful that we can share life on the farm with 

our family and celebrate the milestones of 

each year  with those we love the most!

Last year we were looking up information about our farm to see if we

could qualify to be recognized as an Arkansas Century Farm. 

Sure enough, the land where our house and the dairy sit was purchased in

1919 by Ryan's Grandad Grover Bagby. 

Although we had the abstract for the land purchase,

I also went to the County Circuit Clerk's office and looked up

the county deed records. It was quite a fascinating process to hold

those records from so long ago filled with beautiful handwritten documentation

of the history of land in Benton County.  

Dairy farming has been a part of the farming on this land for 90 years. 

On April 16, Ryan completed 50 years of milking dairy cows on the family farm.

I'm so thankful for the 37 years that I have been a part

of the dairy farming life.  Taking a city girl  and training

her was no easy job for the farmer!

Although we won't be milking cows,

I can still look out the kitchen window watching the

dairy heifers and beef cows enjoy these  early  spring

pastures  and give thanks for the blessings of farm living!
